Monte Cotelo vineyard is located alongside the Santiago Way near Villafranca, just in front of Fuente de San Lázaro Vineyard, and situated on a hill that separates the entrance of Villafranca del Bierzo and the main Valley of Western Bierzo. It is protected from the winter frost and other weather bad conditions. The hill ends up in Santiago Church and the old cementery of Villafranca. The vineyard has limestone soil with basic nature and with bedrock nearby. Facing northeast, it is 600 meters above sea level.
The vineyard was abandoned 10 years ago, and a lot of vines were dead in the past. Most of the plants are Mencia grape variety. They are more than 80 years old. All of our vineyards were planted on acid soils except this one. We begun working on it in 2020. From the top of the hill with have an enjoyable landscape view that allows us to understand Bierzo climate.
